The Internet Lied to Women About What Success Has to Cost
The Hidden Costs of the “Empire” Business Model & Why A Boutique Business Model Works Better.
I made a $60,000 mistake in my business in 2025.
Honestly, it was probably closer to a $200,000 mistake when I factor in the sales I DIDN’T make because my energy and focus were pointed in the wrong direction.
And the wild part?
I made the mistake because I was following advice from someone building an empire… when I run a boutique business.
There’s a difference.
In this article:
• Why so many women are accidentally building businesses they secretly hope to escape from someday
• The $60,000 mistake I made following empire-building advice that was completely misaligned with my boutique business model
• Why relationship-led businesses often outperform ads, cold traffic, and constant visibility for women coaches
• The 5 pillars of a spacious Boutique CEO business that creates wealth, leadership, freedom, and sustainable growth without hustle culture
But I think a lot of women don’t realize that until they’ve already spent years trying to force themselves into business models that were never actually designed for the life they want.
At some point online, women internally absorbed this idea that success has to look massive to matter.
- More scale.
- More visibility.
- More followers.
- More ads.
- More pressure.
- More complexity.
- More team.
- More noise.
- More hustle.
And if your business feels simple, relational, spacious, or deeply personal… somehow it must mean you’re “not thinking big enough.”
I don’t believe that anymore. As a matter of fact, I think this messaging is damaging to women’s confidence, families and peace.
In fact, I think a lot of women are waking up right now and realizing they don’t actually want the businesses the internet told them they should want.
That realization changed everything for me.
Because a few years ago, I started listening to advice from people building giant companies and massive organizations.
And to be clear, there’s nothing wrong with that model.
It’s just not MY model.
But when you’re surrounded by messaging that constantly tells you:
“Scale faster.”
“Run ads.”
“Grow bigger.”
“Get more leads.”
“Build the empire.”
…it’s easy to start believing that if you’re not doing those things, you’re somehow behind.
So I went all in.
Ad spend.
Creative.
Management.
Funnels.
Testing.
Tweaking.
Waiting.
Trying to make the numbers work.
And here’s what people don’t tell you enough about ads:
Even when they start working… the leads are often colder.
Less connected.
Less trusting.
Less ready.
Meanwhile, I already had women in my world who knew me.
Women who trusted me.
Women quietly watching.
Women already feeling connected to my work.
I had simply lost sight of something fundamental:
80% of my revenue has always come from relationships.
Not ads.
Why Relationships Outperform Ads for Female Entrepreneurs
Relationships.
Conversations.
Rooms.
Referrals.
Trust.
Personal invitations.
Human connection.
That was already working.
That had ALWAYS worked.
But I temporarily abandoned what was naturally aligned because I thought success was supposed to look bigger, louder, and more scalable than it actually needed to be.
And honestly?
I think women do this to themselves all the time.
Not because they aren’t capable.
Not because they aren’t intelligent.
Not because they can’t build massive businesses if they wanted to.
But because many women no longer WANT businesses that consume their entire lives.
They want:
- financial independence
- meaningful work
- beautiful income
- deep relationships
- time freedom
- peace
- health
- family dinners
- leadership
- spaciousness
and businesses that actually support their lives instead of replacing them.
And that desire does not make them less ambitious.
It makes them honest.
I think one of the biggest lies women have been sold online is that the only path to wealth and respect is building a giant exhausting empire.
It’s simply not true.
Women do NOT need exhausting empires to become wealthy, powerful, and deeply respected.
And I want to shout it from the rooftops because it matters! For ALL women.
Recently, I was on a collaboration call with someone who wanted me to join their summit. They were looking for women who were building successful businesses. I have that. A very successful business that has allowed me to put 3 boys through college without taking out loans, pay off all my CC each month, take my family on vacations each year to places like Iceland, France, Provence, Catalonia, Italy, Switzerland to hike in the alps, swim in the mediterranean sea, smell the lavender in Provence, drink win in Austria, sip latte’s in sidewalk cafes and so much more.
All while making high multiple 6-figures, year after year, for the past decade. (well over 3 M total) And I started all this after being a stay at home mom of 17 years, getting divorced with only $25 in the bank and a broken down minivan.
When she told me I didn’t “make enough” to be a part of it, because I didn’t make 7 figures annually, I realized we have a very distorted version of success.
I told her, I would never have that level of business, because I didn’t WANT it. Not because I couldn’t.
I shared that I made an intentional choice to have a boutique business and time freedom, over chasing numbers and someone else’s version success. That I preferred to take the last week OFF each month to write, dream, travel and go on retreats. That I had a lean team and didn’t have to make payroll each month. And that my profit margins were not only higher than many 7 figure entrepreneurs, but I was most likely taking home just as much money in revenue as they were. Without the stress, headaches and constant fear of trying to keep it all going.
I think it was that conversation that made me realize I had to take a stand for the woman who was like me, and wanted a boutique business model and could fully own feeling successful. Not as a default, but as an intentional decision.
Introducing the Boutique CEO Model
“A boutique business is a highly profitable, relationally-driven business model designed to generate high-multiple 6-figures without the need for massive scale, large teams, or complex ad funnels.”
I’ll show you:
– the 5 pillars of a spacious boutique business
– what ACTUALLY creates consistent clients without constant posting
– why relationships outperform reach in a boutique business
– and the mindset shift that changes everything for women trying to “scale” in ways that are deeply misaligned
Because the truth is…
Most women do not need a bigger audience, chase bigger numbers or go for “just one more” certification to be feel successful.
They need a stronger ecosystem and permission to build in a way that supports their life, not becomes it.
And once you understand the difference, business starts feeling very different.
FAQ Questions I Hear From Women Coaches All the Time
Do I need to run ads to have a successful business?
Ads can absolutely work for some business models. But many women coaches build highly profitable boutique businesses through relationships, referrals, workshops, collaborations, conversations, and trust-based visibility.
For many boutique businesses, relational marketing converts faster and creates stronger long-term clients than cold traffic.
What is the alternative to scaling a business through hustle culture?
That can look like:– premium offers
– stronger positioning
– relationship ecosystems
– workshops and rooms
– referrals
– intimate communities
– and sustainable client growth without trying to dominate the internet
Scaling does not always require more complexity.
Sometimes it requires more alignment.
How can female entrepreneurs avoid building businesses that consume their lives?
By intentionally designing businesses that support their actual values.
Many women are realizing they do not want:
– constant pressure
– endless launches
– giant teams
– or businesses requiring them to be online all day every day
They want wealth, leadership, freedom, flexibility, meaningful work, and spaciousness.
That requires building differently.
What is the difference between an empire business and a boutique business?
Empire businesses are typically built around volume, aggressive scale, larger teams, and mass visibility.
Boutique businesses are built around trust, authority, relationships, premium positioning, transformation, and human connection.
Neither is inherently better.
But many women are realizing the boutique model creates more freedom, profitability, and sustainability for the life they actually want.

The Boutique CEO Model
One of the biggest shifts I had to make was realizing I was trying to apply empire-building strategies to a boutique business model.
Those are not the same thing.
Empire models are often built on:
– volume
– massive lead flow
– aggressive scaling
– huge teams
– constant expansion
– and systems designed to support complexity
Boutique businesses operate differently.
A boutique business is built around:
– trust
– authority
– relationships
– premium positioning
– intimate proximity
– referrals
– conversations
– and transformational client experiences
This is why relationship-led businesses often convert at a much higher level.
Because trust shortens the sales cycle.
When someone already feels connected to you…
When they trust your leadership…
When they’ve experienced your energy…
When they’ve been in your rooms…
When they’ve watched how you think…
they move differently.
They move faster.
With less resistance.
With deeper trust.
And with much higher long-term retention.
That changes everything.
This is why I teach women to prioritize:
- authority over volume
- relationships over reach
- rooms over algorithms
- trust over visibility obsession
- premium positioning over mass-market hustle
- depth over scale-at-all-costs
Because a boutique business is designed to support your life.
Not replace it.
That distinction matters deeply.
Especially for women.
A lot of women do not actually want:
– 40-person teams
– endless management
– constant launches
– pressure-heavy scaling
– or businesses requiring them to live online 24/7
They want:
– financial independence
– meaningful impact
– consistent income
– spaciousness
– flexibility
– leadership
– freedom
– and work they genuinely enjoy waking up to
And honestly?
I think many women have spent years feeling guilty for wanting that.
As if simplicity means they lack ambition.
It doesn’t.
Some of the smartest women I know are intentionally building focused, premium, relationship-driven businesses because they understand something many people don’t:
More complexity does not automatically create more wealth.
In fact, complexity often destroys profitability, peace, and sustainability.
Now let me show you the five pillars I believe create the strongest Boutique CEO businesses.
The 5 Pillars of a Spacious Boutique Business
1. Clear Positioning
Boutique businesses grow faster when people instantly understand:
– who you help
– what transformation you create
– and why your approach is different
Clarity builds trust.
Confused messaging creates hesitation.
Women often overcomplicate their positioning because they’re trying to sound impressive instead of becoming memorable.
The goal is not to sound smarter.
The goal is to become KNOWN.
2. Relationship-Based Visibility
This is where most women are overcomplicating growth.
They think visibility means:
– constant posting
– chasing algorithms
– performing online
– trying to go viral
But boutique visibility is different.
Boutique visibility is:
– conversations
– collaborations
– referrals
– workshops
– networking
– communities
– podcast interviews
– strategic rooms
– relationship ecosystems
The highest-converting visibility is almost always relational visibility.
Not performative visibility.
3. Rooms That Build Trust
This changed my business completely.
Rooms accelerate trust faster than almost anything else.
Workshops.
Live trainings.
Retreats.
Masterclasses.
Networking events.
Collaborative experiences.
Intimate conversations.
When people experience you in real time, something shifts.
They stop consuming.
They start connecting.
And in today’s world, connection is becoming a competitive advantage.
4. Premium Transformation
Boutique businesses are not built on selling cheap offers to massive audiences.
They are built on:
– depth
– intimacy
– transformation
– proximity
– trust
– and meaningful client experiences
Women do not need millions of followers to create wealth.
They need:
– stronger positioning
– better conversations
– premium client experiences
– and leadership people trust
That’s what creates sustainable high-ticket growth.
5. Sustainable Leadership
This might be the most important pillar of all.
Because no amount of money is worth building a business that destroys your health, relationships, peace, or joy.
I think many women are realizing they do not want to spend decades proving how much pressure they can survive.
They want to lead powerfully WITHOUT abandoning themselves in the process.
And honestly?
That realization is wisdom.
Why This Model Matters Even More in the AI Era
We are entering a business era flooded with:
– AI content
– automation
– shallow visibility
– generic marketing
– endless noise
And because of that…
Human trust is becoming premium.
The women who will dominate over the next decade are not necessarily the women posting the most content.
They are the women who know how to:
– build relationships
– hold powerful conversations
– create trust
– lead rooms
– create transformation
– and make people FEEL deeply seen
AI can automate information.
But it cannot replace human leadership.
It cannot replace trust.
It cannot replace embodied wisdom.
It cannot replace emotional safety.
It cannot replace relationships.
It cannot replace the feeling someone experiences in your presence.
That is becoming the new premium.
And women who understand how to build relationship-led ecosystems will become incredibly powerful in this next era of business.
Not because they’re louder.
Because they’re trusted.
That’s the future.
And honestly?
I think it’s a much more beautiful way to build.
Success is not:
– proving how much pressure you can survive
– becoming endlessly productive
– sacrificing your life to be respected
– or building a business you secretly hope to escape from someday
Real success is:
– financial independence
– leadership
– freedom
– impact
– spaciousness
– meaningful work
– beautiful income
– and building wealth in a way that still allows you to fully live your life
The goal was never to become consumed by your business.
The goal was to become free through it.
